CARBON

ComBio has an area dedicated to carbon-related issues that looks at the following subjects:

Where applicable, and aligned to the client’s need, the decarbonization offered by ComBio may lead to carbon credit projects. Our projects are eligible for CORSIA certification (an ICAO program, part of the UN) and are registered/listed with internationally recognized standards.

The Três Marias project is ComBio’s first carbon credit generator, registered in 2019. The project consists of substituting fuels used in operations at Nexa, a zinc producing company that is part of the Votorantim Group. The successful implementation has drastically reduced the consumption of BPF oil by replacing the fossil fuel with biomass in generating the steam used by Nexa. Annually, 60,000 tons of CO2 emissions are prevented, minimizing the environmental impact of the operation and contributing to SDGs 07, 08, 09, 12 and 13.

Find out more about this and our other projects.

In 2023, ComBio was elected the best developer of renewable energy projects in the Voluntary Carbon Market Ranking, promoted by Environmental Finance, after coming second at the awards ceremony in 2022:

Check out all of the winners in each category:

Since 2014, ComBio has registered its emissions inventory with the GHG Protocol public emissions registry, and in 2016 it first published the audited inventory, thus obtaining the Gold Seal.

With the creation of the Traceable Biomass Program, ComBio has begun to account for the entire carbon footprint running through the raw material supply chain, covering all the emissions factors applicable, such as harvesting, processing and transportation. As a result, ComBio’s emissions inventory for the year 2023 was published under scope 3, which includes 100% of emissions related to the use of raw materials. Having this information verified and audited enables us to know the true impact of our decarbonization, covering the entire biomass logistical chain.
